Googlebot & .info domains for Build a Niche Store

Written by mbpage on May 31, 2008

This is more of an observation at this stage but I decided to build a store using a .info domain.  There has been a lot of speculation about the value of .info domains and the treatment of them by the mighty google and this is interesting.  The store has been live since 15 May but has still not been indexed by google.  I have built a further three stores since on either .com or .net domains and all of these have been indexed!

Make of that what you will.  One domain isn’t enough to draw conclusions but it adds further to the evidence that .info domains do indeed get treated differently.  Google robot is visiting the site but it currently appears sandboxed.

  2. I have purchased about 15 .info domains for BANS sites. I have noticed the same thing as you. My .info domains are not getting indexed in Google. However, I have to admit that I have a couple .com domains that aren’t getting listed too.

I think what’s most interesting is that googlebot has visited the site frequently but has not undertaken any form of indexing in 16 days.

  4. I noticed the same too on my .info domain.

The bad thing was… that I got the domain name free at Dreamhost and could have got a .com domain for nothing instead! I went for a .info as I was targeting a UK based market.

    Oh well… live and learn I guess…

  5. I can agree with you. The most recent update was a wreck for my .info domains. The few that were indexed are gone now.

I think it is a waiting game to see what happens with them, another couple of weeks and I am going to file a reinclusion request with Google to see if that helps.

I have also read elsewhere that there was a massive .info deindexing by Google during the last PR update a few weeks ago.

I have noticed that my other .com BANS sites are doing well, even new and aged that I have bought are getting really good traffic.

Nice site and glad I found it!

  6. It has been talked about in abundance lately on the BANS forums.

I too was hit by the .info plague. I only purchased about 10 domains, so only last about 20 bucks.

But I have completely written them off, as Google is not indexing ANY .info domains currently.

If you want my opinion, buy .com or .net domains as close to your .info ones as possible and start from scratch.
